Basse Normandie/ Lower Normandy (counties of Manche, Calvados and Orne) counts 1,391,000 inhabitants over 17,589 km².
The county of Calvados, is the fruit of a happy marriage between blue ocean and the green countryside.
Seaside resorts: Deauville, Cabourg, towns of art and history: Caen, Bayeux, and leasure and fishing ports: Honfleur, Courseulles, which reduces the weight of the history of the beaches of the Normandy landings: Arromanches, Omaha beach....
If Lower Normandy and its five hundred kilometres of coast attract the Parisians since a certain Duchess of Berry launched the fashion of the sea bathings in the years 1820, it is also a beautiful countryside made up of hills and green pastures.
Of open fields devoted to farming in narrow and irregular pieces of cattle fields which test the undulations of the landscape, of shaded meadows of apple trees aligned in grove, the Norman valleys offer to the visitor a landscape with changing reflections, to rediscover always.
The Norman cow is an important actress of the regional economy; for its meat but more famously for its milk which produces cream, butter and the heroes of the cheese plates like Camembert cheese, the Pont-l'Evêque, Livarot, a whole gastronomy on its own.
And how to evoke Lower Normandy without speaking about apple?
The apple trees have been covering the territory since the Roman Gaulle, but it is only in 1553 that we distil the first cider. With two thousand varieties of apples, Normandy is proud of its production of cider, “pommeau” and special brandy of cider: Calvados or Calva (for the locals).
